Step 7: Enrol in your subjects

Enrolling in subjects at a different University can be a daunting task. If you have any questions, contact our staff at Stop 1 for advice.

Enrol in your subjects online

Your Study Plan is the online tool that structures your course. You can manage your enrolment by planning, enrolling and changing subjects in your Study Plan.

You can enrol yourself into these subjects via the Study Plan if you are:

  • An undergraduate student wanting to enrol in undergraduate subjects which don’t have prerequisite requirements, or
  • A postgraduate student wanting to enrol in postgraduate subjects which don't have prerequisite requirements.

If you are admitted as a postgraduate student, or an undergraduate student wanting to study subjects which have prerequisite requirements, you will need to wait until you receive an email from the Course Planning team confirming your subject approvals and enrolment details. Once you receive this email you will be able to manage the online enrolment and class registration process yourself.

For more information, refer to the subject approval email you receive from the Course Planning team or see our Study Plan FAQ.

Once you receive this email, you will be able to manage the online subject enrolment yourself.

If you are an incoming study abroad and exchange research student, this step is not required as your enrolment is managed by your supervising faculty.

Tips for enrolling in subjects

  1. Enrol in 'Approved' subjects: When enrolling into subjects, you will need to view your Study Plan.
    • If you are an undergraduate student, you can add undergraduate subjects that don’t have any prerequisite requirements to your study plan yourself.
    • Undergraduate students are only permitted to enrol in one postgraduate subject.
    • If a subject in your Study Plan is 'Pending', you may be asked to provide additional information to Stop 1 staff to demonstrate that you meet the prerequisites.
  2. Manage your load: You are allowed to enrol in a minimum of three subjects (or 37.5 points) and a maximum of four subjects (or 50 points) for the semester.
  3. Manage your Study Plan: In the first two weeks of semester you will be able to add and drop subjects, once you have been approved to enrol in them. Adding new subjects will require approval from your home institution first, then from the University of Melbourne.
  4. Ensure you know the details of your subjects: Check the University Handbook for any conditions specific to these subjects such as quotas, pre-teaching periods and locations.
  5. Check your subject's delivery mode: Some subjects are taught online, or campus-based (in person), or dual-delivery (a combination of online and campus-based). You can find the delivery mode for your subjects in the subject listing of the Handbook.
  6. If you are having trouble enrolling your subjects, submit an Enrolment assistance form.
