Student Recap

Master of Marketing and Communications student, Candace Tang, shares her recount of the Outdoor Gallery Launch in May.

The first Student Precinct activation, the Outdoor Gallery, launched on Monday 22 May.

The event started with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony from Wurundjeri Elder Colin Hunt, followed by an opening speech and introductions by Project Sponsor and Head of University Services, Paul Duldig. Former University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) Indigenous Representative, Tyson Holloway-Clarke, and UMSU Indigenous Representatives, Marley Holloway-Clarke and Wunambi Connor then shared an overview of the Under Bunjil publication and introduced the artworks and artists to the audience.

Coinciding with National Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day, the inaugural exhibition has a focus on Indigenous art created by University students. The extraordinary works include three pieces of work illuminated in lightboxes by students Marley Holloway-Clarke, Todd Fernando and Pierra Van Sparkes and two large-scale paintings created by Victorian College of the Arts students Amba-Rose Atkinson and Sam Harrison.

If you missed our launching event, never fear – the first exhibition will run until 6 June. When you're there we encourage you to share any photos you take of these magnificent artworks using the hashtag #studentprecinct
