Building good paragraphs

Understand paragraph structure, cohesion and coherence, and other elements that assist you to produce well-developed academic paragraphs.

Paragraphs are an important structural element of good writing. They are the building blocks of your writing. Like bricks, they need to be made of good solid content with material that helps them stick together and read in a unified way. There may be some structural differences in the different writing tasks, but generally the paragraph structure within your written assessments remains the same.

What will I learn?

This module will help you:

  • Recognise the different parts of a paragraph
  • Select suitable pronouns to increase cohesion
  • Identify appropriate connectives to increase cohesion.
  • Analyse your own writing for elements of cohesion, coherence and paragraph structure.

This module should take approximately 60 minutes to complete.
