Preparing to write

Start all writing assignments here. Unpack the requirements of your task, generate ideas, and make a plan to guide your research.

The first step in the writing process is to analyse the task. Writing tasks at university can be complex and you may be asked to write in a variety of genres and styles depending on your discipline. Before you begin writing you need to fully understand what’s expected of you in terms of the task and research requirements.

Investing time early in the process helps you to directly respond to the specific task requirements, use appropriate structure and style for the genre, and develop a targeted approach to research, helping you stay on task and on track.
