Exam venues and seating - Section contents

Get familiar with your exam venue, how to get there and what services and facilities are available.

There are three main venues used for exams at the University of Melbourne. Your personal exam timetable in my.unimelb lists the venue for each of your exams.

Plan your trip to the exam venue

To minimise stress on the day, you should aim to arrive at your exam venue at least 30 minutes before your exam starts. So, if you’re travelling via public transport, make sure you allow plenty of time. Use the PTV journey planner to get the latest updates and find the best route on the day. If you're running late for your exam, visit our FAQ for more information.

Venue information

The Royal Exhibition Building is in the Carlton Gardens next to the Melbourne Museum.

If you have an exam at the Royal Exhibition Building, your timetable will show either 'Royal Exhibition Building East' or 'Royal Exhibition Building West.' These locations indicate on which side (East or West) of the building you will be sitting your exam. The East side of the building is on the Nicholson Street side, while the West side is on the Rathdowne Street side.

Getting there

  • By foot: The Royal Exhibition Building is a 21-minute walk from Wilson Hall on the Parkville campus.

  • By tram: Tram route 86 and tram route 96 both have a stop outside of the Melbourne Museum. There is also a free City Circle Tram which passes the corner of Victoria Parade and Nicholson Street.
  • By train: You can take a City Loop train to Parliament Station. A tram ride from Parliament Station to the Royal Exhibition Building takes four minutes. Otherwise it takes around seven minutes to walk to the venue from the station.

  • By bus: Bus routes 250, 251 and 401 travel to Rathdowne Street.

The Royal Exhibition Building is a big building so allow extra time to make your way to the north entrance (opposite the museum) where you need to enter the venue for your exam. Doors open 10 minutes prior to the official exam start time.

UMSU will also be located in the same tent and they have stationary supplies for sale, just in case if you forgot to bring a pen or pencil.

Seating plans are also displayed at the exam venue on the day. At the Royal Exhibition Building, the seat plan will be located on the side of the exams information tent near the north entrance (opposite the museum entrance). At Wilson Hall, you can find it on the entrance doors of the hall.

Clash and Alternative Exam Arrangements (AEAs) venues

Clash venues and Alternative Exam Arrangements (AEAs) are situated across multiple venues. Details of these rooms are included in your personal timetables where applicable.

There are storage areas for bags at AEA venues, however they are unsecure.
