Book your flights

So, you’ve been offered a place at the University of Melbourne. Have you thought about how you’re going to get here? We’ve put together a few booking tips to make planning your journey a little easier.

When to arrive

For most courses, the first day of classes can be found on our key dates page. Plan ahead to be ready for Melbourne Orientation in February.

Dates to consider when booking your flights

  • Orientation: This is one of the highlights of the University’s social and academic calendar, and a great time to meet new friends, understand your course and find your way around campus.
  • Your student visa date: You will be unable to enter Australia before this date. If you intend to book flights before your visa has been granted, we recommend that you book a flexible flight where you can change the date.

Finding accommodation

Summer is always a busy time in Melbourne. Major events such as the Australian Open attract many tourists and there is not always a lot of accommodation available. If you have not already arranged accommodation via the Melbourne Accommodation Program or a Residential College, then you will need to book temporary accommodation in Melbourne as soon as possible.

Flight booking tips

  1. Book your flight early.
The closer to the departure date, the fuller the plane and the more expensive the seats! Try to book your flights as early as possible. If you intend to book flights before your visa has been granted, we recommend that you book a flexible flight where you can change the date.
  2. Use different airlines.
You don’t have to use the same airline to get to your destination. Whether you are booking online or with an agent, make sure you get the best price and flying times for each leg of the journey by exploring the full range of airlines available.
  3. Avoid extra transaction fees.
Always check the fine print and know the fees you will be required to pay– whether it’s a credit card percentage fee or a transaction fee.
  4. Check the airline’s website.
It’s good to do your research first by checking the flight comparison sites – such as I Know the Pilot or Skyscanner – but once you’ve found the best price and the best times, check the airline’s own website before you book. Sometimes you’ll find the same flight even cheaper.
  5. Delete cookies from your browser.
Ever noticed how when you’re searching for flights, the prices increase each time you look? Try deleting cookies or opt to use private browsing so that you get real-time pricing.
  6. Check prices on a special student discount site.
If you have proof of your student status you might receive a discount if you book through a student flight service such as Student Flights or Student Universe.
