Identity Bricks Project

The Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development, Murrup Barak Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development, and the Student Precinct project team are pleased to present the Identity Bricks project - a project that supports students and staff to create or select an object that represents their own identity or cultural journey as an Indigenous person.

Resin Brick

Participants' own objects of significance will be encased in a clear resin brick to form part of a permanent installation in Building 189 on the Parkville campus. The project symbolises reciprocity and mutual exchange related to working on Wurundjeri Country, by reflecting on participants own stories of community.

In mid-2021, participants selected and submitted the object they would like to have encased in their resin brick. This was followed by two workshops designed to support participants in exploring their own cultural journey and identity through storytelling, a presentation from an Indigenous elder, and guided reflections on cultural identity.

All resin bricks will be cast and laid in Building 189 by mid-2022.
