Students at the Centre

Actively collaborating with our students is an essential aspect of the Student Precinct Project, ensuring that the completed space is truly 'owned' by University of Melbourne students.

Two recent events, the Student Precinct Ambassador Induction Morning and the Sustainability Principles Workshop, were great examples of the varied ways students are making their mark on this Project.

Ten new and existing Student Precinct Ambassadors came together on Friday 7 July 2017 to hear an overview of the New Student Precinct Project, progress-to-date, upcoming co-creation opportunities and activations, and to participate in a tour of the Precinct site. The role of a Student Precinct Ambassador is to provide support to Project events and co-creation activity, and to champion the New Student Precinct within their respective Faculties and to peers. Our fantastic Ambassadors represent a diverse profile of Melbourne University students, with international and domestic undergraduate and postgraduate students from six Faculties.

Responding to the University’s Sustainability Plan and the Project's commitment to sustainability, a Sustainability Principles Workshop was facilitated by UMSU’s Environmental Representative and Student Precinct Project Assistant, Lizzie Nicholson, Associate Director, Sustainability Property & Sustainability, Clare Walker, and Manager Sustainable Campus Design, Gerard Healey to 16 students (see image below). The workshop validated the qualitative data gathered as part of the Project’s Co-creation Community in late 2016, again highlighting that green spaces, good end-of-trip facilities and a sustainability-focused food and retail offering on campus are priority issues for students.

The long-list of principles articulated at the workshop will now be shared with the University student and staff body through a series of interactive co-creation activities and events that will encourage those engaged to share their views and opinions on the sustainability principles they would like to embedded in the design and development of the Precinct.

Look out for further co-creation opportunities that you can be involved in by regularly visiting the Events tab on our webpage.
