Frequently asked questions
How do I apply for one of the new scholarships?
All eligible students will be automatically considered, there is no application process to complete. Once assessed as successful, you will receive a letter confirming your scholarship offer and the relevant terms and conditions.
Scholarship offers for commencing students are usually sent on a monthly basis. Scholarship offers for current students will be sent from January 2022 on a rolling basis when results for 2021 become available. Unsuccessful candidates will not be notified.
What is the minimum GPA/WAM required to be eligible for a scholarship?
The University offers a number of scholarships for students from a range of disciplines, noting the award of scholarships remains a competitive process and we are unable to offer a scholarship to every applicant. The additional scholarships on offer for 2022 are available to specific areas and programs where we wish to encourage enrolments from international students. For current or future students to qualify, a WAM of at least 80 (or equivalent) is required, but the actual WAM used for selection may be higher.
Why isn’t my faculty part of the scholarship offering?
The University is committed to supporting all our students throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, offering increased flexibility and services and investing in improvements to online study and resources. More than 16,000 of our students have accessed grants and we’ve distributed almost 78,000 free meals to around 10,000 students, in partnership with SecondBite.

Australian and New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and holders of permanent humanitarian visas are also eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place, which is an enrolment which is subsidised by the Commonwealth Government. For 2022, the number of access scholarships for domestic students experiencing disadvantaged circumstances will almost be doubled for 2022.
What if I have less than a full time load remaining in my undergraduate course, will I still be eligible for a scholarship?
For eligible high achieving current undergraduate students that have less than 50 credit points to complete in your program, the fee remission (or payment) will be adjusted according to the number of subjects left to complete (for example if you have 12.5 points left to complete you will receive $1,250).
I want to study at the University of Melbourne but I won't have my final results when applications close. Does this mean I won't be considered for a scholarship?
You will be automatically considered for applicable scholarships once your final results have come through. Please ensure that you submit your course application before the closing date.
Can I defer my scholarship?
The expanded scholarships are primarily offered to support your studies in 2022, you will need to commence your studies either Semester 1 or 2, 2022. As we have other existing scholarships and bursaries with varying terms and conditions, make sure to check your scholarship offer.
What will be covered by the Melbourne Welcome Grant and when can I apply?
Once travel restrictions are lifted or for those that receive government approved travel exemptions prior, all 2022 enrolled international students who are travelling from outside of Australia during 2022 will be able to receive a $4,000 grant towards the cost of travel, quarantine and adjustment to study and life in Melbourne. See Melbourne Welcome Grant for information on how you can claim your grant after arrival into Melbourne.

Yes, you will receive both the scholarship and the Melbourne Welcome Grant.
Can the University arrange a travel exemption since I have a scholarship?
If you are waiting to travel to Australia to commence or resume your studies on-campus, please note that Australian Government restrictions prohibit non-Australian citizens travelling to Australia at this time. We continue to follow the advice of the Victorian and Australian Governments regarding travel restrictions into and out of Australia.
Unfortunately, we are not able to facilitate any travel exemptions. We recommend you continue to monitor the Department of Home Affairs website for further Government advice. We will contact you as soon as we know more about the possibility of travel to Australia to commence or resume your studies on-campus.
Why is the University increasing tuition fees in 2022 when it is unclear whether I can study on campus?
The University made the decision to hold tuition fees for international students and domestic fee-paying students in 2021 at the same level as our 2020 tuition fees, to provide some assistance and enable more students to continue their studies. Our commitment for 2021 is to support students through our expanded $87 million scholarships program.
It’s important to note that our financial aid service can provide support and advice to students facing financial hardship and students may also seek approval for a payment plan to assist with the payment of fees.
While the mode of delivery may be different, we continue to uphold the academic integrity and quality of our curriculum. Whether students are studying online or on campus, the value of a fully accredited University of Melbourne degree has not changed. This comprises the collective knowledge of our academics and the life experiences and skills gained through your time as a student, whether online or on campus, in class or through co-curricular activities.
