How class timetabling works

You need to complete steps each study period to help us create your class timetable.

Please note:

  • Melbourne Medical School does not use MyTimetable. Your school will handle the timetable process.
  • Melbourne Business School does not use MyTimetable. For class scheduling, check your Student Community page on Canvas.

Important steps to create your class timetable

We will email you via your student email account when a timetabling deadline is approaching. Here is an overview of the key milestones.

Planning period

  • In this period you can plan your class timetable using the plan tab in MyTimetable
  • You can create multiple plans ready to submit when preference entry opens.

Create a timetable plan

Preference entry period

  • We’ll email you when preference entry opens for a study period you’re enrolled in. The email will include the preference entry deadline.
  • In this period, you can enter your class preferences for your enrolled subjects.
  • You will number the class times in order, the first being your first preference for each class, tutorial or other delivery mode required for each subject.

Please note: While your preferences are not guaranteed, it does offer you a chance to have some input into your class timetable.

Enter class preferences

Class timetable creation

  • Once preference entry has closed, MyTimetable will allocate classes to everyone who entered preferences
  • Subjects will be unavailable in MyTimetable while timetables are being generated
  • You will receive an email to notify you when your class timetable is ready.

Key dates

Review and adjust period

  • This is your chance to review your class timetable in MyTimetable.
  • You can adjust your class timetable during this time. If capacity is available, you can swap into a different class if needed.
  • If your classes are clashing, you will need to adjust your class timetable. Read more about clashing classes.
  • If you no longer want a class on your waitlist, please remove it during this period. If you don’t, you may be moved to the class if a spot opens up, which will change your timetable.
  • During this period, we may add new classes or change lass times, location and delivery methods. We'll email you if any of your assigned classes change.
  • If you didn't enter preferences, you'll be able to create your timetable by selecting classes that still have capacity available.

How to use MyTimetable

Attend classes

  • You will attend your classes as shown on your class timetable
  • We’ll update your timetable if a spot opens up in a class you’re on the waitlist for
  • If a class on your waitlist did not become available, you must attend your allocated class
  • If you have any unallocated classes, we'll automatically assign you to a class
  • The review period will remain open for a short while so you can make any final changes to your class timetable
  • Once you finalise your timetable, you attend the same class time for the whole study period.

How to find your classroom

Timetable period closes

  • Once the review period has closed, you will not be able to edit your class timetable
  • If you need to make late changes, you will need to submit a Timetabling Assistance Form (TAF).
