A certified copy is a photocopy of an original document that has been confirmed as a true copy by an authorised person. It does not verify the original document is genuine. It only confirms the copy matches the original.
For example, a University of Melbourne graduate may need a certified copy of their academic statement or testamur.
See the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety website for a list of authorised certifiers.
If you are submitting documents to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for an Apostille, you must have your copies certified first by an Australian Notary Public Lawyer and an authorised signatory of the University.
Note: A Notary Public Lawyer is different from a Justice of the Peace. See the Australian Notaries Public website for more information.

Yes, you may nominate an authorised person to collect your academic statements from the University. This person (your proxy) must provide the following:
Option 1
- A signed and dated letter of authority from you that includes your student ID and a statement that authorises the person (proxy) to act on your behalf, and
- A photocopy of your photo ID that clearly shows your signature (i.e. passport or driver's licence) so that the University can verify it against your signature on the letter.
The proxy's own form of photo ID so that their identity as the named proxy can be confirmed.
Option 2
- A power of attorney nominating them as being able to act on your behalf, and
- A form of photo ID (e.g. passport or driver's licence) showing their signature; so that their identity as your named proxy can be confirmed.
If these requirements are not met, the documents cannot be released.
