Student@Work Intern – Marketing Stream
1) What is a typical day like as an intern in your stream?
A key task for my internship was YouTube closed captioning. As I developed an efficient system to finish this task faster, it became a filler between more creative tasks like drafting newsletter articles for the EmployMe platform and providing user feedback for online programs. I also assisted with ad hoc tasks such as certificate design, workshop preparation, and data analysis.
2) How has your internship supported your professional or career goals?
Having worked in the digital marketing for small businesses, I was keen to enter a similar role within larger organizations to understand corporate culture, workflows, and performance requirements. The S@W internship was the perfect opportunity as it allowed me to work closely with the Careers and Employability Digital Team. Through this process, I was able to observe my supervisors and teammates, and understand what skills are required to be successful in their positions. I was also exposed to project planning, data analysis, and many cross-team collaborations that were conducted at a larger scale than what I have previously encountered. Overall, this helped me refine my work preferences so I can better navigate future employment opportunities.
3) What did you enjoy the most about your internship?
Despite being a S@W intern, I was treated like an employee. I was given clear performance expectations, the necessary resources and autonomy. I was also given constructive feedback that empowered me to further improve my work, and in return I was also encouraged to share my opinions. These are all things that I deeply enjoy and appreciate. I felt like I was a part of the team, making significant contributions to existing and upcoming projects. It gave me a great sense of fulfilment and empowerment.
4) What is one skill that you have learned during your internship?
Through this internship, I learnt how to manage mistakes and develop resilience around setbacks and slipups. I’m the type of person who strives to perform my best but will beat myself up if I fall short. So when I was late to a Zoom meeting in the second week of my internship, I felt extremely guilty. But thanks to a timely S@W workshop, I learnt how to take ownership of my mistake, fix my calendar, and move on. I learnt that one mistake doesn't define a person; and a good intern isn't defined by a lack of mistakes, but rather the ability to learn from them.
