
How to book your graduation
You will receive an email from the graduations team when the graduation booking service opens in the week leading up to your ceremony.
When the graduation booking service opens, you will need to:
- Reserve your graduation regalia (academic gown/dress)
- Reserve your two guest tickets (Doctoral graduates receive five guest tickets)
- Pay your graduation fee.
Please ensure you complete the above steps before your graduation day. If you do it on the ceremony day, you will have to pay a $50 late fee.
Fees
All graduates attending a ceremony need to pay a graduation fee. You will receive an email when your ceremony fee is available to be paid.
Fee Amount: $260.00
What's Included:
- 1 graduate ticket
- 2 guest tickets (Doctoral graduates receive five guest tickets)
- Hire of official UoM regalia
- Post-ceremony celebration.
Payment Method: Online card payments only.
Students facing financial hardship can seek help by contacting Financial aid.
Financial Aid helps students by:
- Giving advice about student loans
- Giving advice about money for students in tough situations
- Helping you find other services that can support you.
What if I paid for graduation but don't go?
If you don't attend your graduation ceremony:
- You'll get your money back automatically
- The refund should come within two weeks after the last ceremony.
If you don't get your refund after two weeks:
- Please submit an online enquiry
- Include a copy of your receipt in your message.
Guest tickets
Each student graduating gets two free guest tickets with their ceremony fee. You must book these tickets through the graduation booking service.

If more tickets become available, we'll email you when you can buy them.
Please note
- There are not many extra tickets
- They are sold on a first-come, first-served basis
- Extra guest tickets cost $25 each
- They are non-transferable and non-refundable.
Graduation regalia
The University of Melbourne has established conventions of academic dress. All graduation ceremonies hosted by the University follow these conventions.
Collecting your regalia
- All regalia will be available to collect on your ceremony day
- Collection will be at the Ceremony venue
- Please refer to Graduation day event information for collection times and locations.
Please note
- Regalia is not available to buy
- You must wear the regalia provided by the University
- Please don't damage the hired items
- All hired items must be returned within two hours of your ceremony ending
- Regalia cannot be returned during the ceremony.
How to wear your regalia
Your graduation regalia includes your gown, hood or hat. This will vary depending on your qualification, read about Academic regalia by degree type below. Please note: Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students can wear a cloak or special stole.

- Wear it over your clothes
- Don't add decorations or change it
- Wear medals or accessories under the gown.
Please note: your clothes are visible under your gown. Please dress for the occasion.

- Wear it flat on your head
- Don't pin it or add decorations
- If you can't wear it for cultural reasons, please tell the graduation team.

- Shows your degree colours
- Wear it on top of your gown.

Post-nominals
You can add post-nominals once you have been conferred and have been awarded your graduation certification.
You can search for your course post-nominal using the post-nominals list.
Use the following format to show that your degree is from the University of Melbourne.
Examples:
A. Student, BA Melb
A. Student, PhD Melb or A. Student, PhD Melb
Graduates with more than one degree from the University can list each qualification separated by a comma and grouped by award level.
Examples:
A. Student, BCom, BSc Melb
A. Student, BA, BCom, MTeach Melb
A. Student, BA, BCom, PGDipArts, MTeach Melb
If you have qualifications from another institution, you can group them in award level by institution:
Dr A. Student, BA, DipEd Monash, MA, PhD Melb

Conferral: The Conferral is the date your course is officially complete, and you become a graduate of The University of Melbourne. Your conferral date is listed on your official Graduation documentation. This process takes place before the Graduation ceremony and occurs automatically on set dates. You won't be able to attend a Graduation ceremony unless you have been officially conferred.
Graduation Ceremony: The Graduation ceremony is the date the University holds a public celebration of the successful completion of your course. It marks a significant milestone in your academic journey, providing you with an opportunity to celebrate with your friends, family and peers.

After you've received your final results and completed your course, you'll receive an email confirming your official conferral date (this date will appear on your testamur).
After your degree has been conferred, you'll be invited to the next available in-person graduation ceremony. You can view the current graduation schedule here.
Please note, Stop 1 can’t confirm the date of your conferral or graduation ceremony until it has been made available by the Graduations team. Stop 1 also can’t confirm when you’ll graduate if you haven’t completed your course yet.

It's not possible to join a Graduation ceremony after the deadline to RSVP to your invitation. However, you can request to be included in the next ceremony round if you haven’t already postponed your attendance at a ceremony for more than 12 months. Please submit an enquiry to the Graduations team to request an invitation to the next ceremony round.

If you have RSVP'ed to attend an in-person graduation ceremony, you will be emailed by our Graduations team in the lead-up to your ceremony with further details on how to book your tickets and regalia. Please continue to monitor your student and personal inbox for this correspondence.

You’re unable to change your Graduation ceremony date once you’ve been allocated to a ceremony. However, you can:
Postpone your attendance:
Respond to your invitation link before the RSVP deadline to postpone your ceremony for up to one year. If you miss the deadline or need to change your response later, you can submit an enquiry to the Graduations team.
Please be aware of the specific Graduation ceremony rounds, as you may not be able to postpone your ceremony an additional time.
Exceptional Circumstances:
If you have exceptional circumstances for why your ceremony date needs to be changed, you can submit an enquiry to the Graduations team for consideration. Please note, reasons such as employment, study, or wishing to attend the same ceremony as friends will not be considered.
Refund for Non-Attendance:
If you don't attend the ceremony on your registered date and have purchased tickets, you will automatically receive a refund if you don't check in on the day of your graduation. Please allow 5 business days after the final ceremony of the graduation round for your refund to be processed. Any additional guest tickets purchased are not eligible for a refund.

Please note that if the deadline has passed to secure your place in a ceremony, it may not be possible to change your response in order to attend.

You must have your degree officially conferred before being eligible to attend a graduation ceremony.
If your conferral has been deferred, you will not receive a graduation ceremony invitation until that conferral happens.
Please submit an enquiry to the Graduations team below to have your degree conferred.
Conferral dates usually take place at the end of each month.

The Graduations team does not send invitation letters to guests. Invitations are only sent to graduating students.

If your visa is not granted in time, you can submit an enquiry up to one day before the ceremony to cancel your attendance.
If you’ve already paid the ceremony fee, your payment will be automatically refunded after the graduation ceremony round concludes.
