Prestigious travelling scholarship terms and conditions

Terms and conditions for prestigious travelling scholarships at the University of Melbourne.

1. Definitions

Compassionate and compelling circumstances means circumstances that are generally beyond your control, such as: serious illness or injury, pregnancy or childbirth, care responsibilities for dependants, visa processing delays, traumatic experiences, or political upheaval or natural disasters.

Overseas  study program means the program or course of study at the institution outside Australia for which the scholarship was offered.

2. Benefits

  1. The prestigious travelling scholarships provide a living allowance. The value and duration of the living allowance are specified in your scholarship offer.
  2. Living allowances are paid in two instalments per year (usually in November and May) to your Australian bank account.

Scholarship payment may be subject to tax. Seek independent tax advice to ensure that your individual circumstances are covered.

3. Enrolment

3.1 Making changing

  1. You must notify the University of Melbourne as soon as practicable of any change to your circumstances that may affect your eligibility to continue receiving the scholarship, such as:
    1. Deferral or cancellation of commencement
    2. Part-time enrolment or taking leave of absence
    3. Receiving another scholarship
  2. If you received an allowance payment to which you were not entitled as a result of the changes in your circumstances, you must return the allowance payment repay to the University of Melbourne.

3.2 Commencement

  1. You must enrol in the overseas study program in the year for which the scholarship was offered, unless you receive approval from the University of Melbourne to defer commencement of your scholarship.
  2. A deferral of your scholarship  can only be granted if there are compassionate or compelling circumstances that prevent you from starting your overseas study program in the year for which the scholarship was offered.

3.3 Study load

  1. If you enrol part-time with at least 50% of a full-time study load, the living allowance will continue to be paid, however the duration of the scholarship will not be extended.
  2. If you enrol part-time in less than 50% of a full-time study load, the living allowance will be suspended and the duration of your scholarship extended by the duration of your part-time enrolment.

3.4 Leave of absence

If you take leave of absence of your overseas study program, your living allowance will be suspended and the duration of your scholarship extended for the number of half-year study periods during which you are on leave of absence.

3.5 Withdrawal or completion

If you withdraw from or complete your course early, your scholarship will be completed. You will not be entitled to remaining payments (if any) after the withdrawal or completion date.

4. Scholars reports

  1. You must provide a progress report and evidence of enrolment confirming your enrolment in the overseas course in order to receive your living allowance.
  2. You must provide a final report within 14 days of the end of the scholarship. The report should describe how the scholarship has helped you with your studies (both academically and personally) and your future aspirations.
  3. The content in these reports may be provided to donors who supported your scholarship.

5. Concurrent scholarships

  1. You must notify the University of Melbourne as soon as practicable, if you have been offered another scholarship for undertaking your overseas study program which was not included in your application.
  2. Receiving another scholarship may impact eligibility for your prestigious travelling scholarship or reduce the value or duration of the living allowance.

6. Withdrawal and return of payments

If you have provided false or misleading information or you do not adhere to the terms and conditions of your scholarship, and as a result you were awarded the scholarship or receive payments, the scholarship may be withdrawn and you may be required to repay any scholarship benefits to which you are not entitled to within 14 days of being requested to do so by the University of Melbourne.

7. Complaints and grievances

You may submit a complaint or grievance in relation to the application of these terms and conditions in accordance with the Student Complaints and Grievances Policy.
