Quota subjects - Section contents

Quota subjects are subjects that allow a limited number of students to enrol. These are usually laboratory, fieldwork, travel, or studio subjects where capacity is limited by facilities or resources such as laboratories, accommodation or studio space.

What are quota subjects?

Quota subjects or ‘quota restricted subjects’ have a limited number of places. In order for you to register your interest in a quota subject you must check the University Handbook to confirm the quota subjects application process and deadline as it can vary between subjects.

How are spaces selected?

Your enrolment in a quota subject is not confirmed until the selection process has been finalised by the subjects Faculty. This selection process will commence after the application deadline, which is listed in the subjects Handbook guide.

Many quota subjects are assessed on academic merit. Academic merit refers to the grade point average you have accumulated through your previous periods of study. The minimum entry for a quota subject can change each year depending on the applications received. Alongside your academic merit, a request to undertake a quota subject may also be assessed on additional selection criteria such as a written statement, interview, or performance.

Alternatively, spaces for a quota subject may be decided through random selection, enabling you an equal opportunity to participate in subjects that have restrictions.

Community Access Program, Cross-Institutional, or Enabling Students

If you are not a student currently enrolled in a University of Melbourne undergraduate or graduate coursework degree and wish to enrol in a quota subject you will need to submit your application for the appropriate subject by the application date.
