International Student Travel Pass (ISTP)

An ISTP offers international students a discount on public bus, train and tram travel across Victoria.

Public transport in Victoria will be half price for all passengers until 1 January 2027. The 50% discount will apply to full fare as well as concession passengers.

About the ISTP

The ISTP gives eligible international undergraduate students a 50% discount on 90-day, 180-day, or 365-day myki travel passes.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the ISTP discount, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. You are currently enrolled in an undergraduate course at the University of Melbourne.
  2. You are enrolled in a full-time load for the current half-year (between 37.5 and 50 credit points)
  3. You are one of the following:
    1. An international student
(not an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa)
    2. A New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident
    3. Study Abroad student.
  4. You hold a current University of Melbourne student card.

How to apply

2026 International Student Travel Pass (ISTP) codes are now available to download.
1. Get your student card

If you are a new student, obtain your student card first before applying for a transport concession.

2. Request a code

Request your unique code via the University ISTP portal.

3. Check your email

Check your student email for a message containing your ISTP code.

4. Order your pass

Visit the PTV ISTP website and follow the steps to order your pass. You’ll need to:

  • Enter your ISTP code
  • Upload a current photo
  • Choose the duration of the pass
  • Provide a postal address
  • Complete payment details.

If you’ve previously received an ISTP refund

You must use a new ISTP code and create a new PTV account with a different email address from your old one. Then go to the ‘Order’ tab on the PTV ISTP website to request your new pass.

Do not try to renew your old card. It has been deactivated and won't be accepted.

Payment and delivery tips

  • Do not leave the payment screen while your payment is processing. Navigating away may interrupt the transaction.
  • Use only one email address when registering with PTV, so that you do not create multiple accounts. Your unique ISTP code is permanently linked to that email and cannot be changed.
  • Provide a postal address that will remain current for at least one month, as your card may take several weeks to arrive.
  • Once payment is completed and processed, your pass will be mailed to your nominated address.

Public transport in Victoria  was free between the 31st of March and 31st of May 2026. You may be eligible for partial reimbursement to reflect this free travel period if:

1. your pass expired during the free travel period
2. was active during and extends past the free travel period.

You will receive an email with instructions on how to submit your reimbursement claim.

Passes will be available to order from Monday 1 June 2026 at the discounted fare.

Refunds

Find out how to obtain a refund for an International Student Travel Pass (ISTP):

  • You can request a refund based on the number of balance days remaining after the last day the card was used (touched on to travel).

    Please note:

    • Once a refund request is submitted, your pass will be deactivated and can no longer be used for travel.
    • If fewer than 40 balance days remain on your 365-day ISTP, no refund will be issued. This is because when you purchase a 365-day pass, you pay for 325 days, with the remaining 40 days provided free.

To check your remaining balance days and any myki Money, tap your card at a myki machine or call the PTV Call Centre on 1800 800 007.

    How to apply

Submit an ISTP refund request form with the following attached documents:

    • A photo of the back of the myki card (showing your photo and details) which was purchased with your ISTP.

Once your request is received, the University will:

    • Contact PTV to confirm the refund amount
    • Organise the refund to be transferred to the bank account you provided. Check your University email for correspondence about your refund request.

You can return your myki card to Stop 1 Parkville for secure disposal or post it directly to:
