About your student visa conditions and enrolment requirements
Understanding your student visa conditions and enrolment requirements helps you stay on track during your studies. If you don’t meet these requirements, or plan to make changes to your enrolment, this may impact your visa.
This information below outlines your student visa conditions and enrolment requirements. If you’re planning to make changes your enrolment, review the Manage enrolment changes that affect your student visa webpage.
Student visa conditions
Australian student visas have mandatory conditions set by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). While conditions may vary, you must:
- Meet your course requirements, stay enrolled and make satisfactory academic progress during your study
- Maintain adequate Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire length of your stay in Australia
- Comply with student visa work limitations
- Notify the University of your Australian address within 7 days of arrival, and within seven days of change to this address.
It’s your responsibility to understand and comply with your visa conditions. You can check your visa status and view the full list of your visa conditions on your visa grant notice, or through the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system.
Enrolment requirements for student visa holders
As a student visa holder, you must also meet enrolment conditions set out in your written agreement and the University’s Enrolment and Timetabling policy.
Study load
You must enrol in a study load that allows you to complete your course within the dates on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). This usually means full-time study (1 EFTSL per year), unless you have an approved Reduced Study Load (RSL). Go to the Study Load page to find out more.
Full-time study load:
- Coursework students: 100 credit points per year (50 per half-year)
- Graduate research students: 40 hours per week on study and research, including any required coursework
Online learning
There are limits on online study for student visa holders. You must:
- Complete no more than one-third of your course online
- Enrol in at least one on-campus subject each half-year.
Visit the Online study allowance page for more information.
Transferring to another education provider
You must complete at least six months of your principal course before transferring to another education provider. You may transfer earlier only if:
- You receive formal release under the International Student Transfer Policy
- You are government-sponsored and have written approval
- Your course is no longer offered or registered on CRICOS.
