Academic decisions
What is an academic decision
Some academic decisions, such as the award of marks and grades, assessment adjustments and other outcomes for eligible special consideration applications, decisions around the award of credit and credit equivalents, and applications for other matters where the outcome is determined by academic achievement that is dependent on an academic judgement have a dedicated review process or are considered in accordance with the University’s Student Appeal process.
This page will help you find the right pathway for your situation.
Types of academic decisions
Choose the option that best describes your situation to find the right pathway.
-
Simply disagreeing with your assessment grade or mark is not a valid ground for complaint. Academic decisions based on academic judgement are not subject to complaint or appeal.
However, grade/mark disputes that relate to procedural issues or administrative errors in the way the assessment was communicated, conducted or assessed and that do not comply with requirements set out in the Assessment and Results Policy (MPF1326), are grounds for making a complaint.
What to do:
- Contact your subject coordinator or faculty student experience team to request a review of your grade/mark or assessment piece.
-
If you receive a notice of unsatisfactory academic progress, a dedicated process applies.
What to do:
- Timelines are strict — act promptly after receiving the notice and follow the instructions in the notice
- See the Student Appeals Page
- See the Academic Progress Review Policy (MPF1291) for full details
-
A selection review considers whether the University’s selection policies and processes were applied correctly. It does not re-rank applicants or reassess academic merit where the original decision was correct.
You can request a review if it is not clear why your application was unsuccessful, believe the information you provided was not taken into account, or think there was an error in the assessment of your application against the published selection criteria. Selection review requests are not considered on the basis of academic merit.
You must request a selection review before lodging a student appeal.
What to do:
- Submit your request on the Request a review page
- See the Selection and Admission Policy (MPF1295) for details on grounds for review
