Grading schemes

Visit the grading schemes page for a full list of past and current results codes. This page includes previous University of Melbourne and amalgamated institution grading schemes.

If you see an asterisk (*) next to your result, you can treat it as your final result – it is just awaiting official ratification (approval by the board of examiners), which usually takes a few days.

Ratification is an important process with two main functions:

  1. Confirms graduation eligibility: Course completion and graduation cannot be recorded until results are ratified.
  2. Facilitates progress review: Establishes academic standing for the Academic Progress team's review.

Failing a subject

If you've failed a subject, find out what next steps you should take.

Interim results

If your subject result isn't ready by the release date, we'll record an interim result. This is a temporary result that we use until your final result is available. Since it's just a placeholder, most interim results don’t include a mark.

An interim result will update to your final subject result once you complete additional assessment or administrative processes. For example:

  • Complete any outstanding assessment such as sitting a special or supplementary exam
  • If awarded an extension, submit your assignment by the extended due date
  • Attend an academic misconduct hearing
  • Complete the final part of a continuing subject, such as a long research project.

Final subject result release for interim results: within 10 business days of submitting assessment, sitting your exam, or completing administrative steps.

If you receive an interim result and you're unsure what to do:

  1. Check your student email account for messages about your results
  2. If there are no messages, contact your subject coordinator.

Interim result grade codes

GradeMarkDescription
CNT - Subject continuing to the next teaching period.
SPE - Special consideration awarded, complete special assessment.
SUP % Supplementary assessment to be completed.
WXT - Extension awarded, complete assessment by extended due date.
WAF - Assessment to be finalised, or withheld for another reason.

More about interim results

  • You might be awarded a special assessment or exam if you receive special consideration.

    Supplementary assessments may include:

    • An extra assessment if there’s uncertainty about whether you passed a subject.
    • A reassessment if you borderline failed.
    • A final subject assessment.

These assessments are usually held during the special and supplementary exam period.

Learn more about special and supplementary assessment

  • Continuing subjects are taught over more than one study period. You will receive an interim result each results release date, until all study periods are complete.

When you complete the subject, you'll receive your final subject result.

  • Your results may not be ready by the results release date if your assessment's extended due date is close to the end of the assessment period.

In this case, you will receive an interim result until you submit your assessment and it is graded.

Other result types

  • Your teaching staff will provide a result for each graded assessment task you submit. They may also give feedback to help you improve.

Once you’ve completed the subject, these assessment results will contribute to the calculation of your subject result.

Assessment results, also called 'provisional results', are usually available via the LMS. Exam papers may be available via an exam viewing session.

  • Like a GPA, the WAM provides an overall indication of your academic performance in your course. It is calculated as your subject results become available.

Help and support

  • Once you have met your course requirements, your enrolment status will update to complete/passed. This happens at the end of the subject release period in your final study period.

Conferral is when the University formally awards your qualification and recognises you as a graduate.

Conferrals take place at the end of each month, after your course is set to 'complete/passed'.

    View conferral dates

  • Some subjects have hurdle requirements, as outlined in the Handbook. These are conditions you must meet to be eligible to pass the subject.

Hurdle requirements often involve things like:

    • Attending a set percentage of classes
    • Passing the final exam
    • Completing all assessments

Meeting the hurdle makes you eligible to pass but doesn’t guarantee a passing grade. You will fail the subject if:

    • You earn enough marks to pass but don’t meet the hurdle
    • Or you don’t earn enough marks and also miss the hurdle.
  • Support is available to develop your communication and study skills. Academic skills offer one-on-one support, workshops, and resources.

  • We usually remove failed subjects from your study plan within 24 hours to free up space or allow you to re-enrol.

However, it can take longer during results release. Failed subjects recorded from 24 June–5 July will stay in place until Monday 6 July.

Wait until 6 July if you want to:

    • Enrol to re-attempt a failed subject that is still on your study plan
    • Replace a failed subject with a different subject.

If a failed subjects remains on your study plan for more than 24 hours after 6 July, submit an Enrolment Assistance Form.

  • Each graduation ceremony round has a final results deadline. By this date, all your final subject results must published and passed for you to be eligible to graduate.

For the upcoming August graduation ceremonies, the deadline is 5pm AEST, Friday 10 July.

If you have any interim or pending subject results after this date, you will not be able to graduate in August.

    Interim or pending results include:

    • Interim result grades
    • Outstanding special or supplementary assessments (unless declined by the deadline)
    • Delayed results due to assessment extensions
    • Pending outcomes from misconduct hearings
    • Uncleared sanctions that prevent results from being released
    • Non-standard study period subjects with results released after 5 August.

If you miss out on the August ceremonies, we'll invite you to graduate in the next ceremony round you are eligible for.

  • You’ll receive a free digital transcript once you finish your course and your enrolment status shows ‘complete’ or ‘passed’.

If you complete your course in Semester 1, 2026, we’ll email your transcript to you by 5.30pm AEST Friday 10 July.

On your conferral date, we’ll send you an updated transcript that lists your award.
