How extensions work

An extension gives you extra time to submit an assessment. It is a change to the deadline of four or more days.

Extensions are:

  • Available for a single assessment task, not an entire subject
  • Applied close to or shortly after an assessment due date. The documents you need to provide may depend on when you apply
  • A change to the assessment due date only. They do not change assessment requirements, learning outcomes or marking criteria.

Some faculties also accept a Statement of Impact as supporting evidence for eligible extension requests. Learn more about Statement of Impact requirements on the Eligibility and supporting documentation page.

Which assessments can have an extension?

The number of extension days granted will depend on how your circumstances have affected your ability to complete the assessment by the due date.

  • Extensions are commonly available for assessments with a due date, such as:

    • Written assignments
    • Essays
    • Projects
    • Some group assignments

  • Extensions are not usually available for scheduled assessments, such as:

    • Exams
    • Quizzes
    • Lab, practical or performance assessment
    • Attendance or tutorial participation requirements
    • Assessments that must take place on a set date, e.g. oral presentations or Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).

Before you apply

Important information to know before you apply for an extension.

  • You must apply no later than four calendar days after your assignment's due date.

  • Most extensions are processed within five business days.

    There may be delays during busy periods, refer to our current processing times on the Outcomes webpage.

  • Late applications will only be accepted if you:

    • Apply before the release of subject results, and
    • Were unable to submit your application on time (for example due to hospitalisation, severe trauma or close personal or family bereavement), and
    • Submit supporting documents that confirm the impact of those circumstances.

    We do not accept applications after the release of subject results. If you missed the deadline and have failed a subject, you may be eligible to apply for fee remission.
