To help students receive timely outcomes before deadlines, we’re prioritising applications based on assessment due dates rather than application submission dates.

How extensions work

An extension gives you extra time to submit an assessment. It is a change to the deadline of four or more days.

Extensions are:

  • Available for a single assessment task, not an entire subject
  • Applied close to or shortly after an assessment due date. The documents you need to provide may depend on when you apply
  • A change to the assessment due date only. They do not change assessment requirements, learning outcomes or marking criteria.

Which assessments can have an extension?

The number of extension days granted will depend on how your circumstances have affected your ability to complete the assessment by the due date.

  • Not all assessments are eligible for an extension, and the maximum extension available may vary. Before applying, check your assessment’s extension limits and any documentation options the faculty may have on the Eligibility and supporting documentation page.

  • Extensions are not usually available for scheduled assessments, such as:

    • Exams
    • Quizzes
    • Lab, practical or performance assessment
    • Attendance or tutorial participation requirements
    • Assessments that must take place on a set date, e.g. oral presentations or Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).

Before you apply

Important information to know before you apply for an extension.

  • You must apply no later than four business days after your assignment's due date.

  • Late applications will only be accepted if you:

    • Apply before the release of subject results, and
    • Were unable to submit your application on time (for example due to hospitalisation, severe trauma or close personal or family bereavement), and
    • Submit supporting documents that confirm the impact of those circumstances.

    We do not accept applications after the release of subject results. If you missed the deadline and have failed a subject, you may be eligible to apply for fee remission. As this is a separate process to Special Consideration, please familiarise yourself with eligibility criteria and documentation requirements before applying.
