How short extensions work

A short extension gives you extra time to submit an assignment. Extension requests for three calendar days do not need supporting documents if you apply by the due date.

If you need an extension of four or more calendar days, you will need to apply for an extension or special consideration instead.

Which assessments can have a short extension?

Some subjects offer short extensions for different assessments. These will be noted in the subject’s LMS page, or you can start an extension application to see if documents are required.

  • Short extensions are only available for assignments with a submission deadline ("Submitted Assignment"), if you apply by the due date. This includes assignments submitted online or in person. You do not need to have submitted the assignment before applying.

    Examples include:

    • Written assignments
    • Essays
    • Projects.

    • Any group assessment
    • Exams
    • Quizzes
    • Tests
    • Practical exams
    • Oral presentations
    • Exhibitions
    • Written assignments due in class
    • Any short extension requests made after the assignment's due date.

Before you apply

Important information to know before you apply for a short extension.

  • You must apply for a short extension by the assignment’s deadline. If the deadline has already passed, you will need to apply for special consideration.

    If your assessment is due within the next seven days and is not listed in the LMS or application form, enter the assessment details manually.

  • Most short extensions are processed on the same day but some applications may be processed by the next business day. You will receive a notification when your request has been processed.

  • You can apply for a short extension as soon as your assessment is available in the application form.

    Some assessments may not appear in the application form at the start of the semester. We recommend waiting until the week your assessment is due before applying.
