About re-enrolment
Re-enrolment is how to tell the University you want to keep studying in the next year. All continuing coursework students must re-enrol. By re-enrolling you will keep your place in your course and make sure you meet your course or visa requirements.
Get ready to re-enrol
Watch a video guide from our Course Planning and Student Enrolment teams to learn about the re-enrolment process, what you can do to prepare and where to get help if you need it.
When to re-enrol
- Timely period
-
10 November - 8 December 2025
By re-enrolling in the timely period you will:
- Avoid late fees and the risk of enrolment cancellation
- Be ready to create your timetable – you’ll only get timetabling information for the semesters and study periods you’re enrolled in
- Be able to enrol in Summer Term and early offered subjects
- Increase your chance of enrolling in subjects with limited places (quota subjects)
- Access course advice before the busy period.
- Late period
-
9 December 2025 - 5 January 2026
You can still re-enrol during this time but a re-enrolment sanction will appear on your record. It will be removed within 24 hours of enrolling in a subject.
- Late fee
-
If you don't re-enrol or take an approved Leave of Absence before 6 January, you will be charged a $140 late re-enrolment fee.
- Enrolment cancellation
-
If you do not re-enrol or take an approved Leave of Absence during the timely or late re-enrolment period, your enrolment may be cancelled. You will be charged a $400 fee to apply for re-instatement.
Don't miss important enrolment notifications
The University will send important updates about your enrolment via email and possibly SMS. Remember to check your student email account at least twice a week even during University breaks or leave periods. Find out how to forward your student email.

Start your re-enrolment
Use your study plan to enrol in subjects. Remember to accept your terms and conditions (enrolment declaration) in my.unimelb (student portal).
Coursework students
If you are a currently admitted coursework student and are continuing next year, you must enrol in at least one subject during the re-enrolment period. We recommend you enrol for the entire year during this period to meet your enrolment requirements.
You must re-enrol, even if you are:
- Taking a break from your studies
- Studying overseas
- Finishing mid-year (only enrol in first half-year subjects)
- Waiting for your results and don't know if you've passed a subject.
If you are a student visa holder, you must also meet the requirements for student visa holders.
Student visa holders
International students studying or intending to study in Australia must meet their enrolment requirements and their student visa holder responsibilities.
-
- Meet full-time study load requirements
- Complete your course by the end date on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
-
- An approved Reduced Study Load
- An approved Leave of Absence
- Suspension or points limitation imposed by the Course Academic Progress Committee
- If you are in your final semester and need less than 50 credit points to complete your course.
-
You are required to:
- Complete two thirds of your course onshore
- Enrol in at least one on campus subject per half-year period, except for the last subject of your course.
There are restrictions on how many online subjects you can complete:
- Online study can only make up one third of your total course
- Unless you only have one final subject to complete and it is only offered online, you must enrol in at least one on campus subject for each half-year study period.
- Online subjects completed prior to 1 July 2023 do not count towards your limit.
Find out how to calculate your online study allowance on the Online Study webpage.
Failure to meet these requirements may impact your student visa and result in cancellation of your Confirmation of Enrolment.
-
Tell the University if your contact details change within 48 hours of any changes. You must only use English characters to update your information. Check that your details are up to date in my.unimelb (student portal).

Help and support
-
If your enrolment is incomplete after the Semester 1 census date, the following will happen based on your enrolment status:
No re-enrolment or leave taken in either half-year period
Your course will be cancelled after Semester 1 census date. If you wish to continue your studies, you must apply for reinstatement.
Only re-enrolled or leave taken for the second half-year and not the first-half year period
Your course will be cancelled after the Semester 1 census date, and you will be withdrawn from Semester 2 subjects. If you miss the Semester 1 census date deadline and wish to continue your studies, you must apply for reinstatement.
Only re-enrolled or leave taken for the first half-year and not the second half-year period (and are not on track to finish mid-year)
Your course will be cancelled after the Semester 2 census date.
To continue your studies, you must enrol in subjects or apply for leave for the second half-year period before the standard Semester 2 period. If you miss this deadline, you must apply for reinstatement.
-
Subjects are taught online or on campus (in person). To confirm the delivery mode for each subject, check the subject information page.
-
If you re-enrol for 2027, your fees will appear in your Statement of Liability and Student Invoice from mid-December, after the timely re-enrolment period closes.
-
- If your current leave ends in December, you must re-enrol if you still have subjects left to complete. Your leave will not block you from re-enrolling
- If you have approved leave for the first half of next year, you must still re-enrol in subjects for the second half-year period.
-
Re-enrol during the timely re-enrolment period, even if you are waiting to see a course adviser. You can change your enrolment later after receiving advice. By re-enrolling on time, you avoid the late re-enrolment fee. Waiting for advice is not a reason for this fee to be waived.
-
- Re-enrol as if your application will not be approved
- If your application is approved:
- Update your enrolment as soon as possible and withdraw from course/s you no longer plan to take.
- To avoid additional fees, do this before your subject census dates.
-
International students without a current CoE can still re-enrol. The CoE will be organised later, based on your enrolment.
-
- If you were due to finish and may be eligible for Final Subject Assessment (FSA), you won’t have been invited to re-enrol so the re-enrolment deadlines don’t apply
- If you fail your final subject, you should re-enrol because FSA is not guaranteed. You can change your enrolment later if you pass the FSA. Learn more about final subject assessments.
-
- Overdue fees prevent you from re-enrolling
- To lift the sanction, pay your overdue fees.
- Allow up to two business days for payment to be processed.
-
If you can't update your study plan, submit an Enrolment Assistance Form.
Submit as soon as possible and during the timely period to avoid the late fee.
-
We usually remove failed subjects from your study plan within 24 hours to free up space or allow you to re-enrol.
If a failed subjects remains on your study plan for more than 24 hours after 1 December, submit an Enrolment Assistance Form.
