About fees
There are different fees and costs you may need to pay while you study at the University of Melbourne.
Learn about the different types below and how to check your fees.
Tuition fees and student contributions
You pay tuition fees or student contribution amounts to attend the University of Melbourne.
If you're in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), the Australian Government subsidises your tuition fees. You pay the remaining tuition fees as student contribution amounts, or if eligible, defer payment with a HELP loan.
After you enrol, your Statement of Liability will show your tuition fees. You can also browse published course and subject fees to estimate your tuition fees and plan ahead.
How tuition fees are set
Tuition fees are set by the University and may change each year. Find out how fees are calculated and when new fees are published.
-
Each year the University sets its fees through a careful analysis of our costs, operating context and the broader Australian higher education fee landscape, so that we can sustain the quality of our teaching, facilities and services while keeping our fees within an expected range for the cost of study in Australia.
Tuition fees increase each calendar year in response to our operating context and associated increases in costs.
All fee changes are approved through the University’s governance processes and are subject to the caps set out in the Student Loans, Fees and Charges Policy.
Student contribution amounts are set by individual institutions within the maximum amount established by the Commonwealth Government.
-
Tuition fees for the following year are published in stages:
- August to September – estimates for prospective students are available on Study at Melbourne – fees.
- November – when the Handbook is published, course and subject fees are available on the Estimating your fees page.
Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)
Most students are charged the SSAF each year. It helps fund non-academic services and support programs at the University.
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
Most international students studying in Australia on a student visa need OSHC. It's a requirement set by the Department of Home Affairs.
Additional study expenses
Depending on your course and activities, you may incur extra costs for specific services, materials, equipment, excursions or administrative processes.
