Late payments and penalties
Learn about the late penalties, fees and sanctions that may apply if your fee payment is overdue.
Missing a fee deadline
If your payment is late, you may face:
- Penalty fees
- Sanctions on your account
- Cancellation of subject or course enrolment.
Full fee-paying students can request a fee date extension in specific circumstances.
Further detail is available in the University's Student Loans, Fees and Charges Policy (MPF1325).
Late payment penalty fee
If you pay a mandatory tuition fee after the due date, you may be charged a late payment penalty fee of $140 for each missed due date.
Payments made within seven days of the due date will not incur a late payment fee.
If you expect a longer delay, you may apply for a fee date extension.
Exemptions and appeals
-
This penalty does not apply to the following fees.
- Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)
- Student contribution amounts (Commonwealth supported place students).
Late payment of these fees may incur other penalties, such as sanctions and/or withdrawal from subjects:
-
If you wish to appeal the late payment penalty, please email sa-fees@unimelb.edu.au from your student email account, detailing the reasons you believe this penalty should be waived.
Appeals may only be considered if the full payment for the overdue fee was received by the University.
Sanctions for overdue fees
If your fee payment is overdue, you may receive an overdue fees sanction on your student record.
An overdue fees sanction may restrict you from:
- Accessing your results
- Enrolling in subjects
- Graduating
You'll be notified of an overdue fee sanction through my.unimelb, your student email account and the LMS.
To remove an overdue fees sanction, you'll need to pay all overdue fees.
Removing overdue fee sanctions
-
Pay your fees to remove the sanction. The sanction will be lifted once the payment shows up in your student account. This does not happen immediately upon payment. Please allow 1–7 days.
Your payment method affects how quickly the University gets your fee payment. Choosing a payment method with a shorter processing time can help your sanction be removed sooner.
Check the My Alerts section of my.unimelb to see if your sanction has been lifted.
-
If your sanction isn't lifted seven days after payment, email a copy of your proof of payment to the University.
Email: sa-fees@unimelb.edu.au
Enrolment cancellation
Failure to pay fees can lead to the withdrawal of your enrolment in unpaid subjects and/or your course.
Full fee-paying students
Failure to pay mandatory tuition fees may result in sanctions being applied to your student record, followed by enrolment cancellation.
After cancellation, you can apply for enrolment reinstatement for a non-refundable charge of $400.
Please refer to your Cancellation Notice email for further information.
Commonwealth supported place (CSP) students
Student contribution amounts must be paid, or a HELP loan application submitted, by the subject census date.
If this does not occur, enrolment in the subject will be cancelled in accordance with government legislation.
There is no option to reinstate subject enrolment for CSP students. If you do not maintain your enrolment, you may be cancelled from your course.
Fee date extension
A due date extension may be available for full fee-paying students who need more time to pay mandatory tuition fees.
Apply for an extension before the fee due date.
-
Applications for a fee date extension must demonstrate financial hardship or exceptional unforeseen circumstances.
You cannot get an extension if:
- The due date has already passed
- You are in a Commonwealth supported place
- You are using FEE-HELP.
You may not need an extension if:
- You can make the payment within seven days of the due date. Late payment fees do not apply within this period.
- Eligible domestic fee-paying students may be able to use FEE-HELP from the Australian Government to defer payment instead of extending the due date. Explore this option before the due date.
-
Submit your application to be considered for a fee date extension before the fee due date.
With your application, you must:
- Provide supporting documentation showing financial hardship or exceptional unforeseen circumstances
- Advise when you will be able to pay your fees
- Explain the steps you are taking to ensure payment can be made by the proposed date.
If your application is approved, a $50 administration fee will apply. This fee will be added to your student account and must be paid by the revised due date.
For step-by-step instructions on submitting your application, refer to the Fee Extension Application User Guide.
