Commonwealth Assistance Notice
A fee statement that shows your Commonwealth assistance for a study period.
About this fee document
Your Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) is a snapshot of your enrolment and Commonwealth assistance for your studies at the relevant census date.
You will receive a CAN if you have a:
- Commonwealth supported place
- FEE-FREE Uni Ready (FFUR) place
- HELP loan (HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, SA-HELP, OS-HELP)
Your CAN is not an invoice.
It is an information statement showing your enrolment and any Commonwealth assistance applied to your fees. The information is also reported to the Australian Government and the Australian Taxation Office.
You can use your CAN to:
- Confirm payment receipt of any upfront optional payments
- Know when a fee is added to your HELP debt (student loan deferral).

You'll receive a separate CAN for each census date you are enrolled in.
We'll send it to your student email account within 28 days of your subject's census date (or fee incurral date, where applicable). We recommend you save your CAN for your records, as we generally cannot reissue it.
How to view it on my.unimelb after initial release
- Log into my.unimelb
- Go to Student admin > Fees
- Click Access my Commonwealth Assistance Notice
- Select the Communications tab and view the required communication
- You can then search for your recently issued CAN
What to check on this document
- Census date: Make sure the notice includes all the subjects with that census date. If you have subjects with different census dates, you'll receive a separate CAN for each one
- Your enrolment: Check that all your enrolled subjects are listed correctly
- How your fees were paid: Your CAN shows whether your fees were deferred to a HELP loan or paid upfront.
Correct an error on your CAN
Your CAN is a snapshot of your enrolment and Commonwealth assistance at the relevant census date. Review it carefully to make sure your enrolment and fee information is correct.
-
If a subject is missing, check whether it has a different census date. You'll receive a separate CAN for each census date.
If your enrolment details are incorrect, this may indicate an enrolment issue. Check your study plan and read our enrolment information.
If you believe your CAN contains an error, you must notify us in writing within 14 days of the CAN issue date.
-
Example 1: A subject appears on your CAN even though you withdrew before its census date.
